We are blessed to know Mr. Lewis. Ever since our kids were little and we got to know him through my father-in-law, Mr. Lewis, as we call him, has always been gracious enough to allow us to come fish in his pond behind his home, in the middle of his scenic Gold Hill,NC cow pasture. We love fishing this pond for several reasons. One, because it is very acccesible- Riley has some special needs- but what’s more: it is full of good ‘eater size’ crappie. It is a good fit for Riley, since we can set his chair up near the water where he can sling his zebco left-handed and launch a gulp minnow out under a cork and get the job done! Well done Riley! What makes this place even more special is how nearly every time we’re there, Mr. Lewis will ride down on his red Honda three wheeler and inquire about the day’s catch. He always comes down to shoot the breeze, and always is gracious, even when responding to Riley’s thirteen millionth question. He even pretends that Olive Garden is his favorite restaurant- not because it is- but because Riley loves to hear him say it. Mr. Lewis and Riley are separated by seventy-plus years, but you’d never know it when they start talking about fishing. We have made some great memories at that pond. From stellar days catching bucketfuls of eleven-inch crappie, to other days like the one I unexpectedly hooked a six-and a-half pound bass, at which (I’m told) I squealed like a little girl. Oh, and don’t forget Riley’s twenty pound carp he caught fishing there with Pawpaw. A special place and a special gentleman who shares it with us.
